First Aid Training

Whilst it is not actually mandatory for kinship carers to hold a current first aid certificate, knowing first aid can literally be a lifesaver, and all parents and carers alike should have training in it. Take a moment to consider what you would do if the child in your care were to be injured, choke on a toy, fall into a pool, get bitten by a snake. In an emergency, please dial ‘000’ immediately, but do you know what to do whilst help is en route?

A Senior First Aid Certificate lasts for three years, while certification in CPR lasts for 1 year. The bulk of the training is usually done face-to-face, though some providers may offer online learning or virtual classroom components too. You will have to pass a first aid assessment and demonstrate you can perform CPR satisfactorily in order to receive your certificate. Most providers will help you to achieve this, because first aid training is about gaining knowledge, not just being able to “pass”.

ACT Together may offer first aid courses from time to time, or you can book with a first aid training provider directly. Either way, as a carer with ACT Together, they should cover the cost of training you in first aid. Confirm this with your Case Manager or Carer Support Worker before booking anything, as they may be able to recommend a preferred provider. If your case management still lays with CYPS, ask your CYPS Case Manager for your first aid training to be provided or paid for by the department.

There are a number of first aid training providers offering courses in the ACT, some of which are listed below:
